Damage Report The Turkmen Mosque in Jisr Al-Shughour December 2015

Jisr Al-Shughour is a city in the northwest part of the province of Idlib. It lies on the Orontes River (Al-A’assi) and has a population of 44,322 according to the 2010 census.

The city’s strategic location on the highway between Aleppo and Lattakia makes it a hub that connects the industrial capital of the country with the coastal cities.

History

Historical records indicate that the city was established the early 17th century. Some travelers noted the city’s relatively young age as evidenced by the presence of an inn, a mosque, and a bathhouse to serve caravans travelling between Aleppo and the coastal regions. Families then moved to the city to enjoy the public amenities provided by the Ottoman Sultanate.
