Site Monitor Report on Batrasa February 2016

The site of Batrasa is located right next to Majaliya. One of the site’s most prominent features is a building known as the Sculptor’s Dwelling or (Maskan Al-Nahhat). Part of that building is carved out of the limestone rocks with distinctive decorative carvings on the inner walls. Archaeologist Melchior de Vogüé documented the site in detail.

The site monitors surveyed the site and documented damages caused by:

  1. Illegal digging by looters.
  2. Repeated attacks on the site by regime forces and Russian air strikes.
  3. Neglect over the last five years.
  4. Damages due to land reclamation.
  5. Quarrying stone from the site to be used in new construction.
