Condolences: Archaeologist Olivier NIEUWENHUYSE 1966 - 2020

With great sadness and sorrow, the team of The Day After-HPI sends its deepest condolences on the death of the great Dutch archaeologist Olivier NIEUWENHUYSE after a struggle with the disease in the Dutch city of Leiden.

This good-hearted person was one of the best friends of the Syrian heritage in the Netherlands. He had previously worked in northern Syria for many years in Sabi Abyad project within the Dutch Archaeological Mission to specialize in the study of pottery from the Neolithic period. He worked and taught at the University of Leiden and the Free University of Berlin, he participated in many projects and initiatives related to Syrian antiquities, in addition to that he published many interesting articles and scientific books.
He worked to protect the heritage of Syria until the last minute of his life within the Raqqa project at Leiden University, during the war, he was one of the most important defenders of Syria and its cultural heritage.
